DAAD African Paediatric Fellowship Programme, 2020-2021

Applications for the DAAD African Paediatric Fellowship Programme are currently being accepted. This In-Region Scholarship Programme is available for African students willing to pursue a master degree in Paediatric field at the University of Cape Town in South Africa.

The African Paediatric Fellowship Programme (APFP) is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and it provides support for graduates and postgraduates from sub-Saharan Africa (excluding South Africa). In-Region Scholarships are aimed at students who want to participate in a study programme in a country of their home region (here: Sub-Saharan Africa/outside their home country).

• Host Institution: APFP, Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, University of Cape Town, South Africa.
• Fields of study: Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Development Paediatrics, Paediatric Allergology, Paediatric Cardiology, Paediatric Critical Care, Paediatric Endocrinology, Paediatric Gastroenterology, Paediatric Infectious Diseases, Paediatric Nephrology, Paediatric Neurology, Paediatric Oncology, Paediatric Pulmonology, Paediatric Rheumatology.
• Number of awards: 6.
• Duration: 3 years.
• Eligible countries: Open to Africans (excluding South Africa).

DAAD African Paediatric Fellowship Benefits

Selected applicants for the DAAD Scholarship will have the following benefits:

1. Annually Tuition fees;
2. Annually Study and research allowance;
3. One Printing allowance at the end of the program;
4. Monthly Scholarship (Accommodation, Food etc.);
5. In-Region only: Two Travel allowances (beginning/end of scholarship);
6. Insurance (In-Region only).

DAAD African Paediatric Fellowship Eligibility

To apply for the DAAD African Paediatric Fellowship, candidates must meet all the following requirements:

1. have successfully completed generally a three-year university degree with above average results (a three-year university degree):
2. clearly show motivation and strong commitment;
3. have thorough knowledge of the language of instruction;
4. have completed their last university degree not more than 6 years ago at the time of application;
5. must be nationals or permanent resident of a Sub-Saharan African country (excluding South Africa);
6. should generally be
   1. staff member of a public university;
   2. candidate considered for teaching or research staff recruitment;
   3. from the public sector.

Female applicants and candidates from less privileged regions or groups are especially encouraged to participate in the program. Scholarships are initially granted for one year and can be extended to a maximum of the regular period of study upon receipt of an application for extension. Scholars must demonstrate satisfactory progress before an extension is granted.

Application instructions

Eligible applicants who would like to apply for the DAAD African Paediatric Fellowship must follow steps below:

First step:
Applicants must apply for their studies at APFP using the contacts and the method that is prescribed by the institution. APFP has set its own deadlines.

Second step:
APFP will provide the shortlisted candidates with the link to the DAAD-Portal. Only the pre-selected candidates are asked to log into the DAAD portal, register themselves and submit a DAAD application.

Required Documents

1. DAAD application form duly filled in (available in the DAAD-Portal);
2. Hand signed curriculum vitae (please use the European specimen form), including a list of publications (if applicable);
3. 1 Recommendation letter by university teachers for Msc degree;
4. Letter of admission for the host university;
5. Certified copies of university degree certificates including transcripts;
6. Letter of motivation;
7. Copy of the passport;
8. if applicable, information on the UNHCR registration as refugee.
