Science Tokyo IGP(C) Scholarship for International Students

The Institute of Science Tokyo (formerly Tokyo Tech) is now accepting applications for its International Graduate Program (IGP(C)) for April 2027 enrollment. The Science Tokyo IGP(C) Scholarship is for international students who want to pursue a master’s, doctoral, or integrated doctoral education program, all taught entirely in English. You do not need to know Japanese to apply, though you will have the chance to take Japanese language classes once you arrive.

The application period runs from 3 August 2026 to 11 October 2026 at 23:59 JST. But there is a catch: you must first get a consent letter from a faculty member at Science Tokyo who agrees to be your supervisor, and you need to email a copy of that letter to the Admissions Division by 4 October 2026 at 23:59 JST. Only after that will you receive the URL and password to access the online application system. Results will be announced on 3 December 2026 at 15:00 JST.

The program covers a wide range of departments across seven schools, from Mathematics and Physics to Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, and Social and Human Sciences. Some departments offer only master’s and doctoral programs, while others also offer the Integrated Doctoral Education Program (a combined master’s and doctoral course). The Graduate Major in Earth-Life Science is the only major offering the integrated option, and the Graduate Major in Materials and Information Sciences and the Graduate Major in Super Smart Society are doctoral-only.

Founded on October 1, 2024 through the merger of Tokyo Institute of Technology and Tokyo Medical and Dental University, the Institute of Science Tokyo (Science Tokyo) is Japan’s newest national research university. With a mission of “advancing science and human well-being to create value for and with society”, it has quickly established itself as a powerhouse, ranking 85th globally in the QS World University Rankings 2026 and 5th in Japan. Its strengths are particularly evident in specific fields, where it ranks in the top 20 worldwide in seven subjects according to QS, achieving the #1 spot in Japan in five subjects, including dentistry, chemical engineering, and computer science. The university is home to over 13,400 students across six campuses in the Greater Tokyo area, and its distinguished faculty includes two Nobel laureates, underscoring its position as a global leader in scientific research and innovation.

Program Details

Science Tokyo IGP(C) Scholarship Benefits

Selected candidates may apply for the JASSO Reservation Program for Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students. This is a monthly scholarship of JPY 48,000, paid from April 2027 to March 2028 (12 months).

To apply for the JASSO scholarship, you must:

• Select “JASSO” as your intended scholarship in the online application system.
• Submit an English Proficiency Test Score Report via the separate Scholarship Application Form (the link is provided in the application guide).

The selection for JASSO is conducted in February–March 2027, and results are announced by the end of March. Note that you must pay enrollment and tuition fees even if you receive this scholarship, and it cannot be combined with other scholarships that do not allow multiple grants.

Fees

• Enrollment Fee: JPY 282,000
• Annual Tuition: JPY 635,400

Payment of these fees can be postponed upon application and approval. Note that the amounts are subject to change, and bank handling charges are not included.

Science Tokyo IGP(C) Scholarship Eligibility

The eligibility conditions depend on the program you are applying for. You must satisfy one of the following:

A. Master’s Program / Integrated Doctoral Education Program

• Completed (or expected to complete) 16 years of education outside Japan by the day before enrollment.
• Graduated (or expected to graduate) from a university or college in Japan by the day before enrollment.
• Completed 3+ years at a university outside Japan and obtained (or expect to obtain) a degree equivalent to a bachelor’s.
• Completed 15 years of education and are individually assessed by Science Tokyo as having an outstanding academic record.
• From a country where 16 years of education is not required, but you have spent at least one year as a research student or fellow after undergraduate education, are at least 22 years old by the day before enrollment, and are individually assessed by Science Tokyo.

B. Doctoral Program

• Obtained (or expect to obtain) a degree equivalent to a master’s or professional master’s from a university outside Japan by the day before enrollment.
• Obtained (or expect to obtain) a master’s or professional master’s degree in Japan by the day before enrollment.
• Individually assessed by Science Tokyo as having academic abilities equivalent to a master’s holder and at least 24 years old by the day before enrollment.

Important notes:

• Applicants who fall under certain conditions (A(3), A(4), A(5), or B(3)) must contact the Admissions Division for an Individual Assessment of Admission Eligibility.
• Japanese citizens may apply if they hold a valid long-term visa (e.g., permanent residence, student visa, work visa) in their country of residence. Working holiday, tourist, or short‑term visas are not valid.

Admission is revoked if you fail to obtain your expected degree by the day before enrollment.

How to Apply for Science Tokyo IGP(C) Scholarship

The application process for the International Graduate Program admission has several steps (steps 1 to 4), as shown below. Furthermore, candidates willing to apply for the scholarship must complete step 5 by filing in the scholarship application form.

Step 1: Find a Supervisor and Get Consent

You must contact an academic supervisor at Science Tokyo whose research matches your interests. Provide a self‑introductory statement and a letter of intent. If they agree to supervise you, they will issue a consent letter. You need to email a copy of this consent letter to the Admissions Division at [email protected] by 4 October 2026 at 23:59 JST. After verification, they will send you the URL and password for the online application system.

Step 2: Prepare Your Application Documents

Before accessing the online system, gather the following (all in PDF format unless specified):

1. ID photo – taken within 6 months; less than 2MB, 350×290 pixels, 300+ dpi, color, no background, full face.
2. Consent letter – from your Science Tokyo supervisor (already submitted to the Admissions Division).
3. Field of study and study program (research proposal) – use the designated format from the IGP program page.
4. Summary of thesis or research – for master’s applicants: an outline of undergraduate research; for doctoral applicants: a summary of your master’s thesis (or research).
5. Copy of passport – page(s) with name, nationality, date of birth, and photo. If you reside in Japan, submit a residence card. Japanese applicants must also submit passport pages showing visas obtained in their country of residence.
6. Payment verification – application fee of JPY 30,000, paid online via E‑Shiharai Net. Save the payment verification page as a PDF. MEXT scholars are exempt.
7. Official academic transcripts – for master’s applicants: undergraduate transcripts; for doctoral applicants: master’s transcripts. Some departments require both.
8. Certificate of graduation (or expected graduation) – from your previous or current university, with date of issue, name, dates, and degree program.
9. Certificate of degree (or expected degree) – similar to above, confirming your degree title.

Note on translations: Documents not in English or Japanese must be accompanied by certified translations from a public institution or the issuing university. No independently sworn or certified translators.

Step 3: Submit Online

Complete the online form and upload all documents via the Science Tokyo submission system by 11 October 2026 at 23:59 JST. The application fee is non‑refundable, except in specific cases like not submitting the application or being a MEXT scholar.

Step 4: Evaluation Sheet with Recommendation

You must designate a recommender (e.g., a supervisor from your current or previous university) within the application system. They will receive an automatic email and must submit the Evaluation Sheet with Recommendation through the system by the deadline. You will not be able to see their submitted document.

Important: Applications will not be considered without a consent letter from a Science Tokyo faculty member. Only one evaluation sheet may be submitted per application. All required documents must be prepared before you start the online application.

Step 5: Apply for the Scholarships

IGP(C) applicants may be eligible to apply for the scholarships listed below, subject to specific conditions. These scholarships are not open to Japanese nationals. Admission Process

After the application deadline, your intended academic supervisor or department will contact you about the interview and/or examination schedule. Interviews and examinations are conducted in English and may include oral questioning or problem‑solving exercises. The format varies by department.

Results will be posted on the “Admissions Results” web page around 15:00 on 3 December 2026. No inquiries via email or phone regarding results will be answered.

Conditions for Enrollment

Science Tokyo will apply for a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) on your behalf after results are released. However, the COE may be rejected by Immigration. Those without a COE will not be permitted to enter Japan and will be withdrawn. Enrollment and tuition fees, once paid, are non‑refundable.

Newly admitted international students must submit a health certificate signed by a physician within the last three months before enrollment.
