The University of Melbourne Scholarships are open for Australian and international students to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate research degree programs at the university. Approximately 710 scholarships will be awarded across both programs. Around 600 scholarships are available for graduate research students, while at least 110 scholarships are awarded to eligible undergraduate students.

The Graduate Research Scholarships program is a fully funded program that provides 100% fee remission and up to $135,000. The scholarship is awarded to eligible domestic and international students (based on academic merit) who are offered admission to a master’s by research or doctoral degree (PhD) at the University of Melbourne or who are currently enrolled in a graduate research degree. Eligible applicants are scored and ranked according to their academic achievement in their last completed degree and their research potential in their field of study.

The Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship program provides at least 110 scholarships to international students undertaking undergraduate study at the University of Melbourne. The undergraduate scholarship award provides a 25 percent fee remission for the duration of the course. There are other scholarships offered to undergraduate students that you may also apply for to offset other fees.

Program Details

  • Host institution: University of Melbourne, Australia.
  • Fields of study: All eligible undergraduate programs and any eligible graduate research degree offered at the University of Melbourne.
  • Number of awards: Approximately 710 (around 600 for graduate research students and at least 110 for undergraduate students).
  • Duration: One or more years. For graduate research: up to two years for a master’s by research degree and up to four years for a PhD degree (fee offset). Living allowance is provided for up to two years (Masters by Research) and up to 3.5 years (PhD). Undergraduate scholarship duration is for the length of the course.
  • Eligible countries: Graduate Research Scholarships are open to all nationalities (domestic and international students). The Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship is open to citizens of eligible countries with a Gross Domestic Product per capita of US$10,000 or less (based on World Bank data).

University of Melbourne Scholarships Benefits

The University of Melbourne Graduate Research Scholarship is a fully funded program, while the undergraduate program is partially funded.

Undergraduate students

The Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship provides: 25 per cent fee remission for the duration of the undergraduate degree.

Master’s and PhD students

The Melbourne Graduate Research Scholarship provides two types of scholarships, namely (i) stipend and fee offset scholarships (ii) fee offset scholarships:

A: Stipend and fee offset scholarships

  1. Full fee offset for up to two years for students undertaking a master’s by research degree or up to four years for students undertaking a PhD degree.
  2. Living allowance of $39,500 per year pro rata (2026 full-time study rate) for up to two years for students undertaking a Masters by Research degree or up to 3.5 years for students undertaking a PhD degree. The living allowance may be indexed annually and includes limited paid sick, maternity, and parenting leave.
  3. Relocation grant of $2000 for students moving from states or territories other than Victoria or $3000 for students moving from outside Australia.
  4. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Single Membership for international students who require a student visa to study in Australia.

B: Fee offset scholarships

  • Full fee offset for up to two years for students undertaking a master’s by Research degree; or
  • Up to four years for students undertaking a doctoral degree.

University of Melbourne Scholarships Eligibility

To apply for this university scholarship program, candidates must meet the following requirements:

Graduate Scholarship

To apply for a Graduate Research Scholarship, you must be someone who:

  • have applied for and met the entry requirements for a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne; or
  • is currently enrolled in a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne.

All domestic students offered admission to a master’s by research or PhD at the University of Melbourne will receive a Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship (Fee Offset).

Undergraduate Scholarship

To be eligible for the Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship, you must:

  • be a citizen of a country with a Gross Domestic Product per capita of US$10,000 or less (based on World Bank data);
  • have applied for and meet the entry requirements for an Overseas Fee place in a bachelor’s degree;
  • have completed secondary school outside Australia or a foundation program in Australia;
  • not have previously undertaken tertiary studies (excluding extension studies completed as part of a Year 12 program).

The scholarship is awarded to the highest-ranked students based on their final secondary school or foundation studies results. Selection scores are reviewed annually and may vary between years.

How to Apply for the University of Melbourne Scholarships

Eligible applicants who would like to apply for this Oceania scholarship must follow one of the options below to submit their application:

Graduate Research Scholarship

  • If you are a new student and have applied for a graduate research course by the application closing date for that course, you will be automatically considered for the Graduate Research Scholarships.
  • If you have accepted a graduate research course offer and deferred commencement in order to be reconsidered for a scholarship, you must submit an online application form by 31 October to be considered for a scholarship in the following year.
  • If you are currently enrolled in a graduate research course for which you seek a scholarship, you must submit an online application form by 31 October to be considered for a scholarship in the following year.

Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship

Students will be automatically considered for the Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship if they have applied for admission for commencement in the award year.

Successful candidates will receive a scholarship offer within two weeks of receiving their course offer. Unsuccessful candidates will not be notified. Please visit the official page for more details on the University of Melbourne Scholarships.
