UNFPA Internship Program Benefits

Interns lacking external financial sponsorship from entities such as universities, academic institutions, or government bodies are eligible for a stipend intended to assist with living costs. The stipend amount is calculated according to the intern’s agreed work location, which may differ from the hiring office’s duty station in cases of remote work. Payments are generally disbursed monthly in the local currency.

UNFPA Internship Program Eligibility

Candidates for the internship program are selected competitively from the internship Roster by teams looking to integrate an intern into their work. The profiles of the interns are matched with the needs of the organization. To apply, candidates must meet one of the following requirements at the time of application:

  1. Be currently pursuing an undergraduate degree (e.g., bachelor’s or equivalent) and have successfully completed at least one full academic year.
  2. Be currently enrolled in a graduate-level program (e.g., master’s degree or higher).
  3. Have recently obtained a university degree (as defined above) and be available to commence the internship within one year of graduation.
  4. Be participating in a professional postgraduate trainee program that includes an internship placement as a mandatory component.

Additional Qualifications

  • Exhibit a genuine interest in the development sector.
  • Possess strong oral and written command of at least one of the UN’s working languages (English or French), along with fluency in the primary language of the duty station (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, or Spanish).
  • Display the ability to thrive in changing environments and build effective working relationships with colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Note: Immediate family members (father, mother, son, daughter, brother, or sister) of current UNFPA staff members are not eligible to apply for an internship.
