The Slovak Republic Government Scholarship program is a cornerstone of Slovakia’s long‑term development cooperation, offering fully funded opportunities for international students from Official Development Assistance (ODA) countries to pursue bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral studies at public universities across Slovakia. Administered by the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Youth under the Medium‑Term Development Cooperation Strategy for 2025–2030 (Government Resolution No. 2/2025), these scholarships reinforce diplomatic ties while building human capital in partner nations. Prospective applicants benefit from a transparent legal framework—Act No. 392/2015 Coll. on Development Cooperation and Decree No. 50/2016—that ensures clarity around eligibility, fields of study, and award conditions.
Each year, the Slovak government allocates up to 70 scholarships specifically to students from ODA‑eligible countries, enabling them to engage in full‑cycle higher education in Slovakia. Recipients receive coverage for tuition fees, monthly stipends, health insurance, and accommodation, creating an accessible pathway to quality European education. Fields of study are tailored to the development priorities of each partner country, with disciplines ranging from agriculture and environmental sciences to information technology and public policy, ensuring that scholarship holders gain skills directly applicable to their home economies.
Application procedures are clearly defined: candidates must submit a completed application form, certified copies of prior academic transcripts, proof of English or Slovak language proficiency as required by the chosen university, and a motivation letter outlining their study objectives and development impact. The Ministry’s Scholarship Bureau reviews all applications under the guidelines set out in the Medium‑Term Strategy, with final selections announced before the academic year commences. This rigorous yet transparent process guarantees that scholarships are awarded on merit and aligned with bilateral cooperation goals.
Beyond international applicants, the Slovak Republic Government Scholarships also extend to persons with “Slovaks Living Abroad” status, reflecting Slovakia’s commitment to its diaspora under Act No. 474/2006 Coll. and sustained by the Office for Slovaks Living Abroad. This special track strengthens cultural and educational ties with communities worldwide, allowing students of Slovak descent to reconnect with their heritage through study in Slovakia. Together, these initiatives underscore Slovakia’s dual mission: fostering global development through educational diplomacy while nurturing the skills and identities of Slovaks around the world.
