Chinese Government Scholarship at Shandong University Eligibility
To apply for this government scholarship, candidates must be a:
- citizen of a country other than P. R. China, and be in good health;
- bachelor’s degree holder under the age of 35 when applying for master’s programs;
- master’s degree holder under the age of 40 when applying for doctoral programs;
- English-medium Programs
- Applicants whose native language or official language is English are exempt from providing English language certification.
- Applicants whose native language or official language is not English are required to submit the results of the IELTS (6.0 or above), TOEFL (80 points or above, SDU’s DI code: C296), MyBest Scores (80 points or above) and Essentials test (8 points or above), or other equivalent certificates of English proficiency.
- Applicants whose native language or official language is not English and who have obtained their highest degree in an institution where the primary language of instruction is English, do not need to provide IELTS/TOEFL scores but must submit a letter of proof.
- Chinese-medium Programs:
- HSK Level 6 (180 points or above).
- The only exception of the Chinese proficiency test requirement is for applicants who have obtained their highest degree in an institution where the primary language of instruction is Chinese. The official proof must be submitted.
- Applications submitted by current degree students in China’s university who will graduate in 2025 or later are NOT accepted.

How to Apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship at Shandong University
Eligible candidates who would like to apply for this government scholarship must follow instructions provided below.
Step 1: CSC online registration
Create an account at https://studyinchina.csc.edu.cn/ and choose the corresponding program (Type B for university program). The agency No. of the Shandong University is 10422. Download the application form (in PDF) and print it.
Step 2: Shandong University Online Registration
Applicants must log in to the SDU Online Application System for International Students in order to apply. They must first create an account in order to have acces to the online application system. The application information should be fully filled in and required documents have to be uploaded.
Required Documents
- Personal information page of the passport (regular personal passport valid beyond October 31, 2024).
- Undergraduate diploma/degree and master’s diploma/degree or pre-graduation certificate (the pre-graduation certificate must be stamped with the school seal, indicating the expected graduation date, and the graduation certificate must be obtained before September 2024)
- Transcripts of all undergraduate and master courses (stamped with the school seal).
- Two recommendation letters from professors or associate professors (or experts with equivalent professional titles) related to the applied program. The recommendation letters should include the Referrer’s name (handwritten signature), position, institution, telephone number, and email address.
- A Letter of Motivation in Chinese or English. The motivation letter should be written in accordance with the requirements of the template (please click on the following links to download the template for Master or PhD). Applicants applying for Chinese-taught programs should write in Chinese, and applicants applying for English-taught programs should write in English.
- Language proficiency certificate (the certificate should be valid, usually for a period of 2 years. If applicants provide proof of language of instruction, a school letter signed by the relevant responsible person and stamped with the school seal is required).
- Foreigner Physical Examination Form.
- Certificate of No Criminal Record issued by local public security management department (valid within 6 months prior to the application date).
- Statement of Financial Support through a Guarantor and its supporting documents (applicants who apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship and don’t accept any adjustment are exempt from these requirements), including:
- Statement of Financial Support through a Guarantor (please click here to download the template from), which should be filled in Chinese or English;
- Proof of sufficient funds to cover the reasonable expenses for study, living, international travel, etc. during the period of studying in China;
- scanned copies of passport or identification document of the financial guarantor (limited to the applicant or immediate family member).
- Applicants who meet the following criteria are required to submit the following supporting documents:
- For Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan residents who emigrated and acquired foreign nationality and are applying as international students, the following documents are required:
- Certificate of annulment of Chinese nationality;
- Certificate of annulment of household registration in China;
- Certificate of acquiring foreign nationality;
- For applicants obtaining foreign nationality at birth, if either one or both parents are Chinese citizens, the following documents are required:
- Certificate of obtaining foreign nationality at birth;
- Permanent residence permit, passport, or identification document of the parents (one being a Chinese citizen) before the applicant’s birth in a foreign country;
- For Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan residents who emigrated and acquired foreign nationality and are applying as international students, the following documents are required:
- Proof of Employment (if available);
- Table of Contents and Abstracts of Published Academic Articles (if available);
- Additional Supplementary Materials required by Shandong University.
Note : Applicants should be aware that there is a non-refundable application fees of 400 RMB to be paid to Shandong University. The application is invalid for those who have not paid the application fee.
