Applications are now open for the Chevening Europe Defence and Security Fellowship. The program is designed for mid-career professionals from across Europe who have demonstrated leadership potential in security and defense. It aims to develop leaders capable of operating effectively within complex and rapidly changing security and defense contexts.

The fellowship is funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and delivered by Cranfield University at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, Shrivenham. It is open to all non-ODA eligible European countries. The program provides an interdisciplinary and applied learning experience that strengthens participants’ understanding of the strategic challenges facing governments, international organizations, and public institutions.

Through six weeks of teaching, discussion, practical exercises, site visits, individual research, and collaborative learning, fellows will develop practical insight into leadership, organizational resilience, governance, strategic decision-making, cyber resilience, artificial intelligence, and international collaboration. The program also creates lasting professional networks across Europe and the UK.

Chevening Europe Defence and Security Fellowship Benefits

The fellowship is fully funded and provides successful applicants with the following:

  • Six weeks of teaching, discussion, practical exercises, and site visits at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom.

  • Return economy airfare from the home country to the UK.

Chevening Europe Defence and Security Fellowship Eligibility

To be eligible for the Chevening Europe Defence and Security Fellowship, you must:

  • Be a citizen of a non-ODA eligible European country.
  • Demonstrate the potential to rise to a position of leadership and influence.
  • Demonstrate the personal, intellectual, and interpersonal attributes reflecting this potential.
  • Return to your country of citizenship at the end of the period of the fellowship.
  • Have significant professional and/or academic experience in security and defence (at least five years).
  • Provide evidence of meeting at least the minimum English language abilities for the Chevening Awards.
  • Not hold British or dual-British citizenship.
  • Not be an employee, a former employee, or a relative of an employee of His Majesty’s Government, the British Council, or a staff member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
