Applications for the 2026-2027 Japanese Government MEXT Scholarship for undergraduate studies are currently being received. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) of Japan offers scholarships to international students who wish to study at Japanese universities as undergraduate students under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships Program.
The MEXT (MONBUKAGAKUSHO) scholarship program is open to candidates enrolled in an undergraduate course at a university or who are receiving preparatory education in the Japanese language and other subjects prior to placement at the university. This is a unique opportunity to get a quality education for free in Japan.
Winners of this Asia scholarship should be able to arrive in Japan between April 1, 2027, and April 7, 2027. If an applicant is to enroll in his/her university from the fall semester through direct placement, he/she must be able to arrive in Japan during the period specified by the accepting university within two weeks before and after the starting date of the university’s relevant academic term for that year.
Applicants wishing to apply for a research, master’s, or PhD degree program should click on the following link: MEXT scholarship program for graduate studies.

Hii, I’m also from bhutan and i want to apply for the year 2022.
Are you still applying?
Is it possible that it will get cancelled this year too?
“Owing to the ongoing situation related to COVID-19, there is a possibility that the application procedure could be changed or stopped at a later stage, and the Embassy may entirely cancel the selection of candidates of the scholarship programs, for the academic year 2021.” the message is from the Japanese embassy in Bhutan website.
WHEN I LOGIN TO THE JAPANESE EMBASSY IN MY COUNTRY, IT TELLS ME THAT IT HAS BEEN CANCELLED FOR 2021. DOES THAT MEAN I SHOULD WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR OR UNTIL 2022?
Please ask the Japanese embassy in your country. They are they only one who can answer that your question accurately.
Hello sir,
I am a student of Bhutan who completed class 12 and about to pursue degree. Last time I heard that there was a Japanese Mext Scholarship which I thought it was very good opportunity for me to enrol and compete with international students. So for that I applied accordingly but due to current situation off pandemic our chances got canceled. I was kind of sad to hear the news since I was really happy to go to japan and pursue degree in engineering. It was not only my dream to study there but also my dream to visit the country since I was in grade 6.
I am sending this letter to inform sir that, is there any way to enrol the Mext Scholarship. Though the scholarship has been canceled in my country I hope to hear great news from sir.
