Application for the Hansen Leadership Institute Program is now open. The program is a unique opportunity for international and U.S. students to build leadership skills and better cultural understanding to help form a more peaceful future. Fellows receive hands-on training in team-building, public speaking, negotiation, mediation, and working together to solve international problems.

Leadership training includes meeting with political and business leaders to learn real-world skills and how to implement these skills at home after the program. The program is located in San Diego, CA, and is open to international and U.S. undergraduate and master’s students aged 20-25.

Hansen Leadership Institute Benefits

This foundation program in the United States of America is fully funded by the Fred J. Hansen Foundation. This includes international airfare, room and board, and all programmatic costs. If selected the only cost to participants will be the fees incurred in obtaining a passport and spending money.

Hansen Leadership Institute Eligibility

To participate in the Hansen Summer Institute, candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements:

NON – U.S. STUDENTS: (from zones of conflict and/or social strife)

  • Upper division undergraduate with 2 years of college/university or graduate student with a professional interest in international relations, diplomacy, international economic development, or related fields.
  • Students must be between the ages of 20-25 at the start of the program.
  • Must have demonstrated leadership potential outside of the classroom in the community, nation, or region.
  • Have an academic adviser verify in writing the candidate’s English proficiency.
  • Have a valid international passport with a U.S. visa if necessary, by the time the program begins.
  • Preference will be given to those who have never visited the United States but all qualified students are encouraged to apply.

U.S. STUDENTS: (Students from any university in the United States)

  • Upper-division undergraduate with 2 years of college/university or graduate student with a professional interest in international relations, diplomacy, international economic development, or related fields.
  • Students must be between the ages of 20-25 at the start of the program.
  • Must have demonstrated leadership potential outside of the classroom in the community, nation or region.

Successful applicants must demonstrate leadership potential by having worked outside of class in community service, another public service, or in a non-governmental organization. A recommendation form from such a group or organization is required.

Note : Applicants do not need a U.S. visa to apply for the program. If you are selected as a participant, you will be provided with all the necessary documentation to assist in your U.S. visa application, including a letter of acceptance, a letter defining the program’s financial support, a DS-2019 issued by the University of San Diego and a receipt for your paid SEVIS fees.

How to Apply for the Hansen Leadership Institute?

Interested applicants who would like to apply for this North America scholarship must click on the “Apply” button below. Log in to create an account and begin completing the online application. Your application will not be reviewed until it’s fully completed (100% in all sections, including transcripts and recommendation forms).

When you submit a name and email address for your academic referee, they will automatically receive an email with instructions to log in and answer a questionnaire to complete to verify your English proficiency. This verification will be submitted with their recommendation form. This is an automatic process. There is no extra information for you to provide.

The selection committee will begin reviewing international student applications in February and results will be emailed to all applicants in mid to late March.

Note : The next program dates are July 1-23, 2024. If selected, you will travel to the United States a few days earlier than the start date. ALL FELLOWS MUST ATTEND THE ENTIRE PROGRAM. No participants will be allowed to arrive late or leave early.

The application deadline is for international applicants and for U.S. applicants. All application materials must be in by these deadlines.
