The University of Quebec ISMER PhD Excellence Scholarships is available for candidates who have applied or intend to apply for a doctoral program in oceanography at ISMER (l’Institut des sciences de la Mer de Rimouski), starting in fall 2023 or winter 2024 semester.
ISMER brings together many researchers and a community of students from all disciplines of the marine sciences (biology, chemistry, geology, and physics) who are dedicated in a collegial manner to the research and advancement of multidisciplinary knowledge of the coastal and marine environments in a sustainable development and climate change perspective.

University of Quebec ISMER Scholarships Benefits
Selected candidates for the Quebec ISMER Scholarships will be provided with an amount of $22,000 per year, for three years. In addition to the ISMER PhD Excellence Scholarship, all applicants will be eligible for an exemption from foreign student differential tuition fees. If this exemption is granted, students will pay the same tuition fees as Quebec students.

University of Quebec ISMER Scholarships Eligibility
To apply for the Quebec ISMER Scholarships in Canada, applicants must:
- Be able to start the doctoral thesis in the fall 2023 or winter 2024 semester;
- Meet the basic requirements for admission to the doctoral program in oceanography at ISMER;
- Have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.7 / 4.3 or the equivalent (ex. ≥ 14/20);
- The doctoral thesis must be carried out under the supervision of a professor from ISMER.
- Have obtained a letter of support from a professor from ISMER;
- Be in the position to register (full time) in the doctoral program in oceanography at ISMER at the time of obtaining the scholarship.

- a letter of motivation explaining the candidate’s background and how it relates to the proposed project and the ISMER PhD in Oceanography,
- all university transcripts,
- a letter of support from the professor responsible for the project (please check projects on the official page) and
- three (3) letters of recommendation (one of which must be from a director of the student’s research).
Only complete applications that meet the criteria for this scholarship program will be evaluated by the selection committee after the application deadline. The final selection of candidates will be made during an in-person or remote interview.
