Applications are being received for the Finnish Government Scholarship. Scholarships are awarded by the Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI) to foreign Doctoral level students and young researchers to carry out postgraduate studies, research and teaching in Finnish universities. Scholarships are mainly targeted at those Doctoral level students who will be doing their whole Doctorate or Double Doctorate at a Finnish university.

The scholarship program aims to increase mobility to Finland, to support the internationalization of research and teaching and to foster links between Finnish and foreign universities. The scholarship is meant for foreign Doctoral level students/researchers to be invited to Finland or who have not resided in Finland for more than 1 year at the time of applying.

Visiting Doctoral level students and researchers who are doing their doctorate degree at some foreign university can also be considered eligible, provided that the motivation letter of the hosting Finnish university department presents exceptionally good grounds for such an application. The scholarship holder cannot receive another full scholarship or salary with an EDUFI grant.

Programme Details

  • Host Institution(s): Finnish universities and public research centres in Finland.
  • Field: all disciplines available at host institutions.
  • Number of awards: Not specified.
  • Duration: 3–12 months
  • Target group: Open to citizens of all nationalities.

Finnish Government Scholarship Benefits

This government scholarship provides a grant of 1,900 euro/month. The grant is personal and is intended to cover the subsistence costs of the scholarship holder in Finland. Additional support for accommodation will not be paid, nor will EDUFI pay travel or visa/residence permit expenses. Trips abroad to collect research materials cannot be included in the scholarship period.

Finnish Government Scholarship Eligibility

Applications can only be submitted by representatives of Finnish universities who wish to host foreign scholarship holders and commit to shared goals with them. While the application is submitted by the host institution, the scholarship is awarded as a personal grant to the foreign postgraduate student or young researcher.

Post-doctorate research will not be funded. Applicants should have no more than one application being processed at a time. You can apply for the fellowship grant if:

  • you work as a researcher or a teacher in a Finnish university department
  • you will be hosting the research fellow
  • you will commit to common objectives with the research fellow
  • you will offer facilities and equipment for the use of the research fellow
  • you will supervise the research.

You can apply for a fellowship for a non-Finnish post-graduate (post-Master’s degree) student or a young researcher that you will invite to Finland or who has been in Finland for a maximum of one year before applying for the fellowship. The EDUFI Fellowship is available to all foreign nationals and all fields of study.

Fundable Works

The fellowship grant is intended for post-graduate studies as well as research and teaching cooperation in Finnish universities in all fields of study. The program will award the grant

  • for starting work on a doctoral research project if the whole doctoral thesis will be completed in a Finnish university. You cannot apply for the grant at the end of a research project or for post-doctoral research.
  • for completing a double degree in Finland.
  • for a study visit for postgraduate students working on a doctoral thesis at a university outside Finland, if there are particularly compelling reasons for the cooperation.
  • The fellow must work in Finland but is allowed to make conference visits abroad.

If the fellowship period is longer than six months, it can include short visits abroad to gather research material, if needed, in addition to conference trips. These visits in total cannot exceed one month. If more time will be needed for gathering material during the EDUFI Fellowship, the fellowship grant can be applied only for those periods during which the fellow will be working in Finland.
