The 2024-2025 Croatian Government Scholarships are currently being received. The Republic of Croatia Scholarships offer opportunities for studies or research in any field at accredited higher education institutions or research institutions in Croatia. The scholarship is available for foreign students, teachers, and researchers to study or gain further professional experience in Croatian higher education institutions or research institutes.

Type A1 scholarships (4-5 months) are offered to students (BA or MA) who want to spend 1 semester learning Croatian and perfecting their Croatian language skills at either the University of Zagreb (Croaticum) or at the University of Rijeka (Rijeka School of Slavic Studies). A2-type scholarships (4-10 months) are available for students who would like to spend one part (one or two semesters) of their BA or MA studies at a Croatian higher education institution. A2-type scholarships are open to students of all fields of study.

B-type scholarships are for full-degree undergraduate (BA) or graduate (MA) studies (BA: 36 or 48, MA: 24 or 12 months) Croatian higher education institutions. C1-type scholarships are for full doctoral (PhD) program (36 months) applicants. C2 type Scholarship (1 – 10 months) is on offer to Ph.D. students who would like to spend one part of their Ph.D. studies or do research for their PhD thesis at a Croatian higher education institution.

Scholarship type D (1-10 months) is on offer to candidates who would like to carry out postdoctoral studies or research at one of Croatia’s accredited research institutions. E-type scholarships are offered for short research visits (3-29 days). Scholarship F is on offer to participate in the summer seminar organised by the Zagreb School of Slavic Studies in the city of Dubrovnik from the 18th to the 31st of August 2024.

  • Target Group: Croatian language students (A1 type scholarship) is opened for all nationalities while the rest is only available for citizens of the following countries: Belgium (Flanders), Bulgaria, China, Czech Republic, Germany (Bavaria), Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovak Republic, Turkey and Ukraine.

Croatian Government Scholarships Benefits

Selected candidates for this Europe scholarship will have the following benefits.

  1. Undergraduate/graduate studies (A1, A2, B)
    • 300,00 EUR monthly allowance (July and August excluded).
    • Subsidized accommodation in the student residence hall.
    • Subsidized meals at student restaurants.
  2. Full PhD studies and partial PhD studies or research for PhD students (C1, C2)
    • 320,00 EUR monthly financial support (July and August excluded).
    • Subsidized accommodation in the student residence hall.
    • Subsidized meals at student restaurants.
  3. Postdoctoral studies or research 1-10 months (D)
    • 480,00 EUR monthly grant.
    • Subsidized accommodation in the student residence hall.
  4. Short research stays 3-14 days (E)
    • 30,00 EUR per diem.
    • Subsidized accommodation in the student residence hall.
  5. Summer seminar/course (F)
    • Tuition-free course.
    • Free accommodation and meals.
    • Cultural program.

Note : Be aware that only students who are younger than 36 can be hosted in student accommodation. The monthly financial support is not meant to cover all the costs of the scholarship holder but rather it is a contribution to the living costs during mobility.

Croatian Government Scholarships Eligibility

To apply for this scholarship to study in Europe, candidates must meet the following conditions:

Age limit

a candidate must be at least 18 years old at the beginning of his/her mobility in Croatia.

  • No age limit for Semester studies for Croatian language and Slavic studies students (A1).
  • No age limit for research visits (D and E).
  • No age limit for summer seminar on Croatian language and literature (F).
  • 30 years for candidates when applying for Scholarships for BA and MA studies (A2 and B) and for PhD studies (C1 and C2).

Furthermore, applicants should be:

  1. A1: Croatian language students and students of Slavic Studies who are currently enrolled in BA or MA studies. Eligible are also students who are learning the Croatian language. Candidates are required to have completed a minimum of 2 semesters at their home institutions.
  2. A2: undergraduate (BA) and graduate (MA) students who are currently enrolled in studies in their home countries. Type A2 scholarship is open to students of all fields of study. Students are required to have completed a minimum of 2 semesters at their home institutions.
  3. B: Members of the Croatian national minority in Hungary, Romania, and the Slovak Republic and citizens of China. Candidates are required to have a four-year high school degree if applying for BA studies or a BA degree if applying for MA studies.
  4. C1: Members of the Croatian national minority in Hungary, Romania, and the Slovak Republic and citizens of China. Candidates are required to have a master’s degree.
  5. C2: Candidates who are enrolled in a PhD program at an accredited institution of higher education in their home countries or in a country other than Croatia.
  6. D & E: Teachers or researchers at accredited institutions of higher education in their home countries or in a country other than Croatia. Candidates are required to have a PhD degree.
  7. F: Croatian language and literature students and students of Slavic Studies who are at the time of application for the Scholarship enrolled in MA or BA studies. Candidates are required to have completed a minimum of 2 semesters at their home institutions. Eligible are also students who are learning (taking classes of) the Croatian language at their universities. Finally, lecturers (teachers, senior assistants with a PhD degree and teaching/research assistants) who teach Croatian language and literature at universities outside Croatia can also apply.

For Scholarships type A1 an applicant may submit an application only on one occasion during his/her BA studies and once during his/her MA studies (once per study cycle). For all of Scholarships priority will be given to candidates who have not been awarded the Scholarship for studies and/or research in Croatia. Applicants who are interested in research, PhD or a postdoctoral Scholarship should find a host professor (mentor) in Croatia willing to support and supervise their research or PhD project.

A Letter of Invitation must be part of the application package. Applicants for these types of Scholarships (C2, D and E) should contact a mentor/supervisor at the desired Croatian host institution to arrange their visit. Candidates applying for a research visit should be fluent in English or Croatian. The term “research” includes preparation for a doctoral or postdoctoral thesis or any other form of scientific research except medical specialization.

The following candidates are not eligible to apply:

  1. Students who have not completed a minimum of two semesters at their home institutions
  2. Foreign citizens with a residence permit or applying for a residence permit in Croatia
  3. Students already enrolled in a study program in Croatia
  4. Candidates applying for study or research at private Croatian higher education institutions
  5. Candidates without the citizenship of the country that nominates them for the Scholarships.

How to Apply for the Croatian Government Scholarships

Interested applicant who would like to apply for this government scholarship must follow steps below:

Application Pool 1: BILATERAL AGREEMENTS

This Application Pool is open to citizens of countries (and territories) that have a valid/effective educational cooperation program with Croatia or a bilateral agreement signed by the Croatian Government and the relevant ministry of the given country (Belgium (Flanders), Bulgaria, China, Czech Republic, Germany (Bavaria), Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovak Republic, Turkey, Ukraine). Potential candidates must click on the apply button below and follow the instructions to submit their applications. Applicants also need to be nominated by the foreign partner institutions, i.e., national competent authorities responsible for the implementation of the Bilateral Scholarships Programs.

Application Pool 2: SCHOLARSHIPS FOR CROATIAN LANGUAGE STUDENTS

This Application Pool is open to students at language departments of the Croatian language and literature or Slavic Studies students regardless of whether their respective countries have a valid cooperation program or a bilateral agreement with Croatia and regardless of whether the language department of Croatian language and literature falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Science and Education. The candidates for Scholarships that are on offer in Application Pool 2 can only be nominated for the Scholarships by their current Croatian language fellow who should nominate the applicants for the Scholarships by his/her Recommendation Letter/Nomination Letter.

The applicants should then submit the Recommendation Letter/Nomination Letter together with the rest of the required application documents on the online platform. The awarded mobilities must be implemented during the academic year 2024/2025. Mobilities can begin no earlier than October 1, 2024 and must be completed by September 30, 2025. July and August are not acceptable. Applicants should indicate the preferred mobility period in their application form.

The Agency and the Ministry reserve the right to change the requested mobility period and/or place any applicant to a course and/or higher education institution different from those indicated in his/her Bilateral Scholarship application form, if admission as requested by the applicant is not feasible. The mobility can be carried out only at a public higher education institution and institute (private institutions are not acceptable). All mobilities are planned to be physical mobilities.
