The application call for the Government of Mauritius Africa Scholarship for the 2025-2026 academic year is now open. The Mauritius scholarship is awarded to deserving students who are resident citizens of member states of the African Union or of African Commonwealth countries.

Winner of the scholarship are given the opportunity to study Undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD degree programs at Mauritius Universities. The Mauritius Government scholarship for international students is open for full-time study for the normal duration of the candidate’s program.

Since in Mauritius only vaccinated students are granted access to higher education institutions, successful candidates will have to be vaccinated prior to coming to Mauritius. Successful candidates who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons will be required to produce duly certified medical certificates.

Program Details

  • Host Institutions: Public Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Mauritius.
  • Field of Study: Available fields at Mauritius Higher Education Institutions.
  • Number of awards: Up to 15 candidates per country will be nominated (five in each category of Undergraduate and MPhil/PhD).
  • Duration: Undergraduate Diploma (3 years), Undergraduate degree (4 years), MPhil (2 years 6 months), MPhil / PhD (4 years 6 months), and PhD (3 years).
  • Target group: Open to citizens of member states of the African Union and the African Commonwealth countries.

Government of Mauritius Africa Scholarship Benefits

The Mauritius scholarship for African students will support successful candidates in meeting their tuition fees and in contributing to their living expenses during their studies period. Furthermore, this scholarship to study in Africa also covers a return airfare by the most economical route. This will be valid for travel from the country of origin at the beginning of the studies and back to the country of origin upon successful completion of studies.

  • MPhil or MPhil/PhD: A Bachelor’s degree with Honours with at least a 2nd Class in the 1st Division or equivalent
  • PhD: A Bachelor’s degree with Honours and a Master’s Degree or equivalent, with at least one of the degrees being in the field of Doctoral study

Entry Requirements

  • MPhil : At least an Upper Second class Honours degree (or overseas equivalent) in a related subject area.
  • MPhil/PhD : At least an Upper Second class Honours degree (or overseas equivalent) in a related subject area.
  • PhD : An MPhil or a Master’s degree (or overseas equivalent) in a related subject area.

MPhil/ Full Time Programme:

  • (a) Master of Philosophy in Education, MPhil (Ed) Programme – Full-time
  • (b) Master of Philosophy in Mathematics Education, MPhil (ME) programme – Fulltime

Entry Requirements

  • 2nd Class Honours degree or above in the relevant field, which includes a dissertation/research project;
  • Either a Master’s Degree in a related field with a substantial research component;
  • Or a postgraduate award which includes the completion of a research project;
  • Or evidence of research experience;
  • Or professional experience, which can be considered equivalent in terms of research skills acquired and capacity for independent work.

Government of Mauritius Africa Scholarship Eligibility

To qualify for the Mauritius scholarship for African students, applicants must:

  1. Be a citizen of member states of the African Union or the African Commonwealth countries;
  2. Age Limit
    • Undergraduate applicants must be above 18 years of age and must not have reached their 26th birthday by 01 January 2026.
    • MPhil/PhD programs applicants should be less than 40 years by 01 January 2026.
  3. Applicants must have already applied for a full-time on-campus program (Diploma, Degree, MPhil or PhD) at a public Higher Education Institution in Mauritius for the academic year starting in 2025.
  4. Postgraduate applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
    • For PhD programs: a first-class undergraduate degree from a recognized university or an MPhil and meeting the requirements of the awarding body.
    • For MPhil / PhD programs: A recognized undergraduate degree with at least an upper second class degree (or CPA / GPA greater than 60%) and preferably with a master’s degree and meeting the requirements of the Higher Education Institution.
  5. Diploma Programme applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
    1. A minimum of five (5) credits at School Certificate (S.C) or General Certificate of Education (G.C.E) ‘O’ Level or International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), inclusive of a credit in English Language or acceptable evidence of proficiency in English Language; OR
    2. Five (5) ‘O’ Level passes awarded by any other approved examination body deemed to be equivalent to (i) above, inclusive of a pass in English Language or acceptable evidence of proficiency in the English Language; OR
    3. Qualification equivalent to (i) above.
  6. Undergraduate degree Programme applicants should satisfy the minimum grade requirements as indicated below:
    1. at least 21 points at GCE or HSC A-Level, which will be computed on the basis of the following grades obtained in three Principal subjects: A+ = 10, A = 9, B = 8, C = 7 & D = 6; OR
    2. at least an overall average of 60% or an overall average of 12/20; OR
    3. qualification equivalent to (i) or (ii) above.

Note : Mauritian nationals are NOT eligible to apply under this Scheme. Self-financing African students already studying in Mauritius will NOT be eligible to apply for the same program level under this Scholarship Scheme. Candidates already holding an undergraduate degree will not be considered for undergraduate programs.

Mauritius Scholarship Application instructions

To apply for this government scholarship, applicants must follow the steps below:

  1. Applied for at least one full-time on-campus program at a public HEI of their choice. This application must be made as soon as the HEIs have opened their application windows on their respective websites. An applicant may either:
    1. obtain a conditional offer (letter of admission) from their chosen Mauritian public HEI and submit this along with the scholarship application: OR
    2. submit an acknowledgment notice from a Mauritian public HEI that the application for a seat has been made and the appropriate application fee has been paid. The application fee shall be refunded to successful applicants.
  2. Additionally, the application for the postgraduate program must be accompanied by a study/research plan and, for MPhil/PhD, the name of the proposed supervisor(s) in Mauritius.
  3. Download, fill in electronically, print and sign the Mauritius scholarship application form (For Undergraduate applicants), For Postgraduate applicants).
  4. Submit the completed Mauritius-Africa Scholarship Application Form along with the required documents to their respective Nominating Agencies, or the Ministry of Education. This should be done by deadlines setup by local Nominating Agencies.
  5. Nominating Agencies of each country may nominate up to 15 candidates and transmit their application to the following address:

Note : In the absence of Nominating Agency, applicants must refer to their Ministry of Education, to obtain detailed information on the application procedure to be followed when submitting applications.

Required Documents

  1. Completed Mauritius scholarship application form
  2. Certified copy of Birth Certificate
  3. Certified copy of bio-data page of passport (if available)
  4. Certified copies of educational certificates
  5. Certified copies of transcripts
  6. Copy of letter of conditional offer by a public Higher Education Institution in Mauritius (if available at the time of application) OR a copy of acknowledgment notice from a Mauritian public HEI that the application for a seat has been made and the appropriate application fee has been paid;
  7. Medical certificate to be duly filled in and signed by a registered Medical Practitioner in Section 6 of the Application Form. This should be appropriately stamped;
  8. Study/Research plan for candidates opting for a Master’s and doctoral study.
  9. Supporting statement from a named supervisor from a University in Mauritius for PhD candidates.

Certified copies of academic certificates and transcripts, if not in French or in English, must be submitted along with a certified translation in one of these two languages. Candidates only need to submit their application materials to their countries Nominating Agencies, or the Ministry of Education following their internal deadlines. Only Nominating Agencies can send candidate files (after shortlisting and endorsement) to the Ministry of Education of Mauritius.

  2. My concern here is the duration of t course, it’s clear that for undergrad degree it’s years but how about those who applied for Bsc. Medicine ( for which the stipulated time of studies is 6 years), what will the Mauritius gov. do to see that the student completes the 6 year of his studies ?
